Mating time!

Can you see me in this picture? The man who is holding me is Mrs. Penner's teacher for the week. His name is Erik, and he is the teacher for Monarch Teacher's Network. He is showing me these two butterflies in his hand. They are very very old and tattered, their wings have big holes in them. They want to mate before they die, but Erik said they will probably die before they can mate because their wings are so torn. Many of the butterflies are mating so they can lay eggs in Texas and Florida.

This is a picture that made me and Mrs. Penner very sad. It is a picture of me sitting on a tree stump. These forests used to have so many oyemel fir trees (those are the ones the monarchs sleep on during the winter). The Mexican people are so poor and they want to cut these trees down even though it is against the law. They need the wood to sell so their families can eat, and they don't know that someday the monarchs might not be able to fly to these forests if they are not here. But many people, like Monarch Teacher's Network, are trying to protect the forests so the monarchs will always be able to fly here. I remember one time in Canada when beavers almost went extinct, and then people started to protect our habitat, and now there are many beavers. So I hope there is hope for the monarch habitat too.
Bye everyone, I know you are all working hard and being good. See you soon!
Love, Mrs. Penner and Brownie the Beaver

  1. That must be sad for those two butterfllies to hav their wings torn. How old are the trees that are being cut down We hope that no more trees are being cut down so that the Monarachs will survive.

  2. Hi to everyone in P6. It was kind of sad to see the butterfly's wings torn. Someone said it would be like we were 1000 years old. We would be kind of raggedy looking too! So maybe it is just a sign of old age and not so sad. The trees that were torn down were probably about 100 years old. The biggest ones bring the most money so they often cut those down, it is very sad. But the Mexican police now guard the forests so they are protected from illegal logging.

I agree, I hope that no more trees will be cut down. The good news is that they are planting a lot of little trees so the forest will hopefully keep growing.

    Love,
    Mrs. Penner & Brownie
